“If not you – Who? If not now – When?”
The team members of Cumberland County Landfill Alert have been working to push a letter campaign to Senator Kaine and we need your action.
5 minutes and $ .50 will help stop the proposed Multi-State Cumberland County Mega-landfill ! Join the letter-writing campaign and make it happen.
The Cumberland County 1200 acre mega-landfill is in the James River watershed. Cumberland County Landfill Alert-CCLA was formed to oppose and stop this mega-dump. In an effort to bring attention to the project at the highest state level CCLA is heading a campaign for Virginians to send a letter to Senator Tim Kaine. Green Ridge Recycling and Disposal (County Waste) will be the owner. Green Ridge/County Waste has yet filed with the State of VA Dept. of Environmental Quality but may do so soon.
Many efforts are underway to stop the landfill and this campaign is one of them. Below is a five page document “Tim Kaine Letter” that you can print out and mail. Do so now and add your voice to the “NO DUMP” cry of your neighbors and citizens.
More background information….Senator Tim Kaine claims to be protective of the environment. Included in the attachment (page 3 and 4) are two newsletters from the Senator’s office wanting to spend our money to clean Chesapeake Bay. If you read our letter (page 2) we are asking the Senator to contact Gov. Northam and stop the mega-landfill so continued cleanup will not be needed. The best case is the landfill is stopped. The next best thing is to delay it’s construction until more stringent requirements are implemented by the state. Virginia lags behind many states in their regulations for a more “environmental friendly” landfill. This has been brought of the attention of state representatives with favorable response. Lastly, if the project is delayed the owners may stop the project as it’s cost will rise with any delay. Action by the Senator and the Governor can have very positive results.
All you need to do is: Print the 5 pages. Prepare an envelope using the address on the envelope (page 1) Sign your name and address on the letter (so the Senator will know you’re from VA) MAIL THE LETTER AND ATTACHMENTS TODAY (100’s of letters will be mailed this week – make sure your letter is included!) Share this post and attachments to your friends and neighbors for their help to stop pollution of our precious resource the James River. An email will be sent as well.

Dear Senator Kaine,
Attached are two newsletters from your office. They speak about your passion for cleaning up the Chesapeake Bay through taxpayer funds and grants.
I’m sure you’re familiar with the phrase “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. Why not stop the pollution before it reaches the Chesapeake Bay or James River by helping to prevent a proposed 1200 acre mega-landfill from being built in the James River watershed?
Also attached is a flyer from the Cumberland County Landfill Alert organization that identifies the dangers of the proposed landfill among them the site is in the James River watershed where runoff carrying harmful chemicals and toxins will absolutely reach the Bay for hundreds of years.
Governor Northam was made aware of the landfill when he recently visited a state park in Cumberland and showed concern for the project. Currently the company that owns the land will soon be filing for a permit from the State of Virginia to construct the proposed landfill. I would urge you to contact Governor Northam and ask that he work with the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality to halt any permitting of the project as a danger to the environment and public health.
Respectfully,
